I Changed My Mind

I changed my mind about the 1970s dollhouse. Remember, that's the first one I bought recently, for $30, including a bunch of furniture and a family? I've decided that old 1970s particle board isn't my favorite, and the fact that it is not to scale is not my favorite either.

What do you think? This one...?
I got some nice pieces of furniture with the house that I'm now using in my Dad's Dollhouse, including a grandfather clock, a rolltop desk, a full-length mirror, a gold fireplace set, and an old-style wall telephone. I also got some other lovely furniture plus a dollhouse family circa 1978. The other great thing is that the house has roof shingles that will work perfectly on the bare spots of my newer shabby chic dollhouse (the one with the siding, hardwood floors, and stairway).

So, sorry old house, but once I get all the shingles I need from you, it's off to a charity for you! :-( It makes me feel bad, but over the last few weeks, I haven't felt inspired to work on the 1970s house. What keeps coming up for me is the phrase, "You can't make a purse from a sow's ear." Meaning, if I put a lot of work into it, it still won't look that great anyway--it's never going to amount to anything.

I've never liked old-style particle board, not since I bought a six-foot by 4 foot shelf kit that was made from it. It was pretty funny, really! It was for my first apartment after completing school. I didn't realize how heavy particle board was until I had to try to get the box of six-foot pieces into my second-floor apartment. I had to move the box end-over end up the stairs, because I could not lift it! And once the kit was finished, if the shelf had fallen on someone, that definitely would have been the end for them--yikes!

Of course, the house is not built to scale either! The doors and windows would always be too big, and I could never buy things to fit them....

...or this one?
So, I'm feeling a little guilty about using the 1970s dollhouse for its parts before giving it away, but I do feel really excited about moving forward on my shabby chic dollhouse. Dad's Dollhouse is almost finished, so soon I'll be able to start work on the shabby chic house with the teashop and probably ladies hat shop on the lower level. Woohoo! I can't wait to begin! :-) Until next time.... xoxo Jennifer

  1. Jennifer, the dollhouses are for fun and good times, not to annoy them. It happened to me with a big one and gave it to a friend. Now she is happy enjoying it and I have more space to another which makes me more excited :-) Enjoy!!!
    Hugs.

  3. It's always so fun to see what your doing with your minis..

Is there any fairytale house coming on..?? THAT would be lovely too
(this comes from a person who loves withes, Harry Potter staff and .. of couse, fairytales *grin* )

I still have my crochet Mother Goose who is waiting to have a home of her own.. My Apple-cottage is no way near done and I'd like to start to make a shop!!!

I feel I don't get anything done, because I'm always changing my mind on what I should do - but I guess that is part of the fun of making minis.. What do you think??

I wish you a very nice (and fun) week (^^)

  4. Don't worry, Jennifer. That house was not meant to be your project! I know the feeling; you just have to do what feels good when crafting otherwise the result is not to your liking.

  8. Hi Irina! So good to hear from you! Yes, it is easy to get excited about so many different mini ideas! That must be what happened with me and the 1970s house. I see this, it sounds fun, then another, but soon I must rein myself in and have just a couple of projects going at a time. Otherwise, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

I'm excited to see your several projects, plus I want to sign up for your blog giveaway. I ran out of time last night, but in a few minutes I will do it. :-) Thank you for your lovely comment! Have a fun week too!

  9. Oh, thank you Sanne! That is so kind of you to say: "That house was not meant to be your project." I like that so much. Yes, it is important to keep things fun. I must remind myself of this often, so I mention fun a lot! Thank you for your lovely comment!

  11. Hard decision - but to us it seems to be the right decision. Take from that house what's good and useful and than wave goodbye. Room-space and time are too valuable to be wasted with a big project you don't love to do. So have fun concentrating on your Shabby Chic house now - and do that quick (please)... we want pics... ;O)

    Greetings

  13. If you dont love the house then you will never give it your heart. It will just sit there and make you feel even more guilty. So yes use the parts you want. Lol we have enough stress in without giving ourselves more so enjoy what you do want to do and say goodbye to this one :)Have a great week Hugs Maria

  17. Hi Jennifer! :) Don't worry about the house, some project just don't work out and it's very clever accept that.
Inspiration comes for some project and not for others!
The shabby chic house is a great choice! (: I hope you show us some photos soon.
    Love!

  20. Hey you gotta do what you want to do. If I force a house it takes me forever to finish it and it's a chore. No fun. You made the right decision. And that house probably has someone out there looking for it who is going to turn it into a little dream home.
    hugs,

  23. Hi Jen,
There is nothing wrong with recycling bits and pieces from one thing and using it for another, think of how much you are helping the planet by doing that!

  28. Sometimes, if you just store it away for a while, an idea crosses your mind and you find use for it. Meanwhile you can dedicate your time to other minis. These things happen to all of us.

  29. Hi Kate! Very good point! Hadn't quite thought of it like that with the house, even though I regularly save things from going to a landfill to make my miniature vignettes. Silly me! :-) Glad you liked the post!

  35. :(...but I know how it is like. If there's no love, then there will be no motivation. It's just like a real house right? We need to love it first :).

  37. Hi Jennifer I buy my kits from McQuenies miniatures, just digit this name on Googe and it will take to them. They are truly esay, nothing to stain or saw, just a bit of sanding then wax and steel wool.
Fun and quick !! Have a nice day, Rosanna

  41. Sorry I haven't been around for a while Jennifer so I've got a bit of catching up to do here. I think that taking what you want from the house and 'moving it on' is the way to go, someone else might like to work on it and fix it up for a child. I certainly don't see any reason at all to have any guilt feelings about it, I think the old saying of 'someone's trash is someone else's treasure' is really true and by releasing the old house to find someone to treasure it for what it is can only be a good thing to do.

  42. Hi Norma! Nice to hear from you. I like what you said about someone maybe wanting to fix it up for a child. That is who it was built for, so that would be an ideal use for it. Yes, someone might be thrilled to find it for that purpose or for another. I DO like clearing things out and making room for something else too! :-) Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
